More Than Beef – The Spotted Boar Pork
Meat lovers, did you know that on top of premium beef that's lean and tender, you can also get family farm-raised, heritage pork on Piedmontese.com? If you haven't yet tried The Spotted Boar, you're missing out on succulent pork that's clean and tasty!
The Spotted Boar brand name is derived from the heritage breed of pork that hails from purebred Gloucestershire Old Spots. It is an old breed of predominantly white pig with at least one clearly defined black spot. The breed was developed during the 1800s in the Berkley Vale of Gloucestershire, England. They are otherwise known as "cottage pigs" and "orchard pigs" as they are excellent foragers and can live on windfall apples in orchards and residue from pressing cider. Over the centuries, many old pig breeds have died out or are greatly diminished. Gloucestershire Old Spots nearly became extinct in the 1960s with the post-WWII shift to intensive pig production that severely reduced interest in pigs thrived outdoors. Since then, its population has slowly regained its numbers.
The Spotted Boar pork is family-raised the right way on a small Nebraskan farm with a humane and sustainable approach and focuses on gut health to provide the most succulent and flavorful quality purebred pork. Tradition is honored, ensuring that the heritage breed retains its all-natural true pork flavor – flavorful, tender, and clean.
What's the Difference?
The Spotted Boar believes that pork is healthier, tastier, and better when raised for health and happiness.
Commodity pork often aims for the standard of "the other white meat," raising pigs in a state of malnourishment to keep the pork lean and bland with virtually no marbling. As family-raised heritage pork, The Spotted Board pork has a richer, deeper flavor, leaning towards beefiness in texture and bite. It also has wonderful, nicely-marbled, clean-tasting meat and healthy white fat caps that has a creamy and smooth texture. It's the way pork should be, the kind of meat people used to enjoy decades ago.
Certified Piedmontese makes sure that our cattle are raised right, and we don't let it slip with our partners! The Spotted Boar pigs are raised in small quantities in Central Nebraska with 4th-generation stockmanship, with a clean, safe, and comfortable living space with open access to Nebraska air and land. The Spotted Boar has a heavy focus on nutrition and health because of the belief that when the pigs are happy and comfortable, they are healthier and need less medical care, producing a higher quality product. The family farmers focus on optimal gut health – the pigs are fed local grains blended for a balanced ration of protein and carbohydrates. Every effort contributes to sustainable and high-standard practices making for a premium pork product.
The Spotted Boar farms use zero feed-grade antibiotics, and all pigs are fed for gut health as a first priority, promoting a healthy and strong immune system from the onset. While the rest of the swine industry was seeking the least cost nutrition to reap higher return profits, The Spotted Boar never wavered from feeding for gut health first to achieve the correct chemistry in the pig for the highest quality pork. The organic trace mineral pack that supplements gut health nutrients used by The Spotted Boar farms is designed by Dr. Fred Madsen of Highland, IL, who has been working with pig health for four decades, implementing nutrition trends 30 years ahead of the curve. In the end, healthy pork means more nutrition for you!
